IT’S 200 YEARS AND COUNTING FOR STANDEDGE TUNNEL
One of Yorkshire’s finest
examples of industrial archaeology and one of the ‘Seven Wonders of the
Waterways’ will be celebrating its 200th anniversary this April.
Two hundred years after opening on April 4 1811, Standedge Tunnel and the
Huddersfield Narrow Canal, will be marking the occasion with a special
Bicentenary event over 3 days in honour of this extraordinary feat of
engineering
The Horseboating Society will be ‘legging’ the tunnel:
Saturday 2 April: legging one boat, Diggle to Marsden
Sunday 3 April: legging three boats, Marsden to Diggle
Monday 4 April: legging three boats, Diggle to Marsden
Guided walks on 3 days over the tunnel top following the route of the canal boat
horses.
