Hills and Humps Blog May 2009

A late start to this month, though a couple of attempts at some Welsh hills had to be abandoned because of bad weather.

15 My 2009 ~ Callow Hill 1099 ft SO 46060 85040

For folly open days see website,

3 for the price of 1 ;-)

Beacon Hill Radnorshire 1795 feet SO 17645 76797

Beacon Hill from the path running around Stankey Hill

Fron Rocks from the path between Beacon Hill and Pool Hill

Pool Hill 1692 feet SO 17730 75380

Pool Hill taken from Beacon Hill

Pool Hills Pool which was all right for a paddle but still a bit cool for swimming on quite a blustery day.

Stankey Hill 1660 Feet SO 16400 76425

Stankey Hill was a bit of pain because of the lack of official paths, but switching between sheep tracks keeps you going in the right direction.

3 for 2

first off was Long Mountain 1339 feet SJ 26474 05821

The two masts near the summit of Long Mountain left, TV broadcast tx right, O2  Air Wave (Severn Trent Site)

Welshpool (y Trallwng ) from the top of the ring

Quite an easy one as the road runs along the top of Long Mountain, but you do get to play hide and seek with the trig point which is hidden in a wood !

Middletown Hill 1204 feet

Just in case you are unsure about walking in the countryside.

Its a shame that Middletown hill is an unlisted peek as it gives much better views than Moel y Golfa

Breidden Hill looking a lot better than it did in Februarys fog

Moel y Golfa 1322 feet SJ 29045 12495

A view of the A458 crossing the railway line at Trewern

A bit more of a scramble this climb with a few easily passable vertical bits.

Monument at the top of Moel y Golfa

Breidden Hill with cloud rapidly descending.
