The Midlands Heavy Horse Association was formed in
April 1993 when a group of people met at the Bass Brewery in Burton - on
- Trent. It was realised by Terry Keegan and John Nicholson that there
was need for such an association in the midlands. Such an organisation
would provide opportunities for heavy horse owners to work the horse in
a more relaxed atmosphere than was previously possible. It would provide
a centre point for social get together with like minded people to
exchange views and advice. This sort of organisation is of particular
benefit to newcomers in the art of handling the heavy horse which is not
always the gentle giant that it has been portrayed as! There is a general ethos that no particular breed of heavy horse should be favoured above another and in fact, the association activities welcome all working horses into the fold. We have had in the past, Cobs and even Shetlands being put through their paces at our working events and have even said donkeys and mules would add a sense of contrast. Having said this, we call ourselves a heavy horse association because that's what we are. As an association we take an active interest in the development and training of young people, they being the next generation of horse men and women. We hold an annual 'young handlers day' where youngsters are divided into to age groups and compete for 2 superb trophies. Our newsletter to members is very well known and is called the Whisperer, after the name given to the old order of horsemen at the turn of the century. You do not have to be a horse owner to join the association, enthusiasts are welcomed for their input and support and in turn we hope we can give value for money in encouraging their future involvement with these magnificent animals Latest Fillongley Show –Sunday August 10th are offering £40 turnout fee for Heavy Horses.
