Do you like Big Horses ?
Would you like to be part of an Association Promoting the use of heavy horses for work and pleasure in the 21st century
Join us now and help us insure the survival of these gentle giants and the knowledge that goes with them.
History & objectives
We were formed in April 1993 when a group of people met at Bass Brewery in Burton-On-Trent. It had been realised by Terry Keegan and John Nicholson that there was a need for such an association in the Midlands. This would provide opportunities for heavy horse owners to work their horses in a more relaxed atmosphere than was previously possible. It would provide a centre point for social get togethers with like minded people to exchange views and advice. This sort of organisation is of particular use to newcomers in the art of handling the heavy horse which is not always the 'gentle giant' that it has been portrayed as.
There is a general ethos that no particular breed of heavy horse should be favoured above another and in fact the Association actively welcomes all working horses into the fold. We have in the past had cobs and even Shetlands being put through their paces at our workings, and we have always said even donkeys and mules would add a sense of contrast. Indeed, they have their own special place in the history of the working horse.
